Proverbs 15

A soft answer turns away wrath,
but a harsh word stirs up anger.

A gentle tongue is a tree of life,
but falseness in it breaks the spirit.

To make an apt answer is a joy to a man,
and a word in season, how good it is!

The fear of the Lord is instruction in wisdom,
and humility comes before honor.

Proverbs

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge;
fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Wisdom cries aloud in the street,
in the markets she raises her voice; ...
If you turn at my reproof,
behold, I will pour out my spirit to you;
I will make my words known to you.
...
Because they hated knowledge
and did not choose the fear of the Lord,
would have none of my counsel
and despised all my reproof,
therefore they shall eat the fruit of their way,
and have their fill of their own devices.
For the simple are killed by their turning away,
and the complacency of fools destroys them;

Let not steadfast love and truth forsake you;
bind them around your neck;
write them on the tablet of your heart.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways know Him,
and He will make straight your paths.
Be not wise in your own eyes;
fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.
It will be healing to your flesh
and refreshment to your bones.

My son, do not despise the Lord's discipline
or be weary of his reproof,
for the Lord reproves him whom he loves,
as a father the son in whom he delights.

Guard your heart with all vigilance,
for from it flow the springs of life.

There are six things that the Lord hates,
seven that are an abomination to him:
haughty eyes, a lying tongue,
and hands that shed innocent blood,
a heart that devises wicked plans,
feet that make haste to run to evil,
a false witness who breathes out lies,
and one who sows discord among brothers.

The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil.
Pride and arrogance and the way of evil
and perverted speech I hate.

I love those who love me,
and those who seek me diligently find me.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.

Whoever trusts in his riches will fall,
but the righteous will flourish like a green leaf.

The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life,
and whoever captures souls is wise.

Whoever is righteous has regard for the life of his beast,
but the mercy of the wicked is cruel.

The way of a fool is right in his own eyes,
but a wise man listens to advice.

There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts,
but the tongue of the wise brings healing. ...
In the path of righteousness is life,
and in its pathway there is no death.

Hope deferred makes the heart sick,
but a desire fulfilled is a tree of life.

The heart knows its own bitterness,
and no stranger shares its joy.

There is a way that seems right to a man,
but its end is the way to death.
Even in laughter the heart may ache,
and the end of that joy may be grief.

In the fear of the Lord one has strong confidence,
and his children will have a refuge.
The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life,
that one may turn away from the snares of death.

A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh,
but envy makes the bones rot.

Trusting and hoping...

 If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities,
O Lord, who could stand?
But with you there is forgiveness,
that you may be feared.
I wait for the Lord, my soul waits,
and in his word I hope;
my soul waits for the Lord
more than watchmen for the morning,
more than watchmen for the morning.
O Israel, hope in the Lord!
For with the Lord there is steadfast love,
and with him is plentiful redemption.
And he will redeem Israel
from all his iniquities.
...
O Lord, my heart is not lifted up;
my eyes are not raised too high;
I do not occupy myself with things
too great and too marvelous for me.
But I have calmed and quieted my soul,
like a weaned child with its mother;
like a weaned child is my soul within me.
O Israel, hope in the Lord
from this time forth and forevermore.

Great leaders

What great leaders have that good leaders don't?

See John 14: 13 - 15 "Greater love has no one than this, that someone lays down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you."

Why software patents are bad

Patents were created to promote innovation. The idea was that instead of keeping your new invention a secret (and be the only one to make money from it or not make money from it - and the knowledge being lost forever if you die or go bankrupt), you share the knowledge of how you did it with others by taking out a patent. Others can see how you did it, but need to pay you royalties in order to make use of your patent. This makes it possible for people who might not have the means to mass-produce something, to still make money from their invention... thus promoting new inventions.

In South Africa, fortunately, scientific discoveries, mathematical algorithms and methods, any artistic expressions and computer software (programs) cannot be patented. Here is one example of why software patents are bad, in the sense of hindering progress and innovation, instead of promoting it: http://k9ventures.com/blog/2011/04/27/modista/ .

As an aside, software, like any written material (including artistic expressions), can be copyrighted, a fact that is used by the various open-source licences. The GPL would not be possible without the existence of copyright. And copyright is granted automatically to the creator of the written material in contrast to patents, which are many time prohibitively expensive to a small business or private person.
